Liskeard to Honiton
So breakfast at 07.45 hours planned because apparently we have a long way to go and just the odd hillock to overcome..... odd hillock eh, try straight over Dartmoor with a few warm up mountains beforehand, and a couple of smaller ones to finish....all in all nearly 7000 Feet !!!!of climbing these hillocks is the call of the day., let me tell you that makes every muscle in your legs ache a great deal ( that's the polite way of putting !!), and a few more aches besides....., wonder what the heart rate read at times, let alone the calories burned?
Clearly a hearty breakfast is required and indeed devoured, best check the weather again..... oh goody, now we have rain....., now we all accept a little rain is good for the garden but really, this much is a tadd over the top to say the least, holding a hosepipe over Chris and I would not have been that much different to the days conditions facing us, topped of with a little wind, but at least that was with us.
To give a clue to how wet the day became, the lights stopped working on Gary's bike through water ingress, there were so many changes of clothes we ran out, the trusty support crew were dispatched for new waterproof coats and over shoes. The bikes thankfully were giving us no trouble though.
The ride itself was rewarding in the views, whilst somewhat intermittent through the clouds and rain, the scenery, including passing our wives with our clothes hanging off the car on the top of Dartmoor trying to dry them in the wind, were truly fantastic and need to be seen with your own eyes, the scenery not the wives drying clothes that is.
Chris and I achieved downhill speeds coming off of Dartmoor in excess of 45 mph , scared witless in case a sheep ran out!!!, we cycled right through the centre of Exeter, (you can do this on a bike), no such thing as a traffic jam either.....
With phones on just 1% of charge left , just enough to find the hotel, two very tired cyclists reached Honiton around 5.30 pm having overcome wind and a lot of rain, cycled Amazing valleys and just a couple of hills.
The day was topped off with the meeting up with friends of Karen and Chris from years gone by for a lovely fun dinner ( in fact the last time we met them was when Chris and I cycled Lands End To John O Groats 6 years ago !!).
A hugh thanks go to Helen and Karen for the tireless support to our ever changing needs as the days unfold.
to be continued.....
